I was asked by my friend Derek McClung, who plays Bass in “Of Virtue” to come mix the band on their winter 2020 tour kickoff show at The Loft in Lansing MI, a venue I often mixed at as the house engineer, and also rent out the PA to. After this show, the band decided to hire me to record, mix, and master a ‘Livestream’ show during November of 2020, this track being the first of the set.
Recorded at the Aretha Franklin Jazz Cafe in April 2021 for a live concert video production. Recorded live, mixed using Virtual Soundcheck on an Allen & Heath dLive C3500 + CDM48
Inspired by our time in NYC for AES 2019, this track took many different forms as it was started before COVID, but a majority of it was produced/recorded during the summer of 2020. Chase tracked vocals in a shack in his backyard, and I wrote/recorded all the bass and guitar parts in my home studio over 300 miles away.
‘Coasts’ was the first song I had been a part of recording/producing that I was really proud of. Originally done as part of a class project during my time at Michigan Tech, I went on to tweak the mix and submit it to the Student Recording Contest at AES New York 2019, eventually being a finalist and earing a Bronze Medal.
Having never recorded anything other than Rock, Pop, or Metal music, I was quite pleased on how well this recording done at Michigan Tech turned out. It really proved to me that great mics, in a great room, placed correctly to capture some extremely talented musicians can really yield amazing results.
